Newcastle vs. Liverpool - Premier League Football Betting Odds - Sunday, August 27th
The two powerhouses of the North will clash at Newcastle’s home ground of St. James’ Park in what is essentially the “game of the week” slot in the late afternoon on Sunday. This is by far the most intriguing match of the weekend considering it’s the only one pitting two teams against each other with realistic aspirations for top four. This will be a very interesting match not only because it’s one of the Premier League’s most historically significant fixtures, dating back to the 1890s, but because for the first time in a while, both Liverpool and Newcastle United have their sights set on very similar goals.
Liverpool has been dominating this matchup in recent years, last suffering a defeat at the hands of Newcastle back in 2016. Since then, Liverpool has racked up nine wins and four draws against the men in stripes. In fact, Liverpool was the only team in the Premier League last year to do the double on Newcastle and beat them both home and away.
However, Newcastle had their best season in recent memory last year, and while they will be looking to build upon that, it might be hard to reach those lofty goals again. Their 1-0 loss to Manchester City was the first sign of that, with the scoreline belying a very dominant City performance.
Nonetheless, they might be catching Liverpool at the perfect moment right now. Manager Jurgen Klopp has been trying to bring depth and quality to his midfield with a litany of signings, but those were recently pilfered by Chelsea’s Todd Boehly. That could be a spot on the pitch where Newcastle can take advantage and push on.
Liverpool simply look empty in there, with three attacking minded guys trying to figure out how to stop a counter or supplement the back line. Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali should make a significant impact on this game and their control of the center of the park could be what Newcastle needs to boss this match.
Also worth noting is that the Mo Salah departure rumors have picked up a bit more steam this week, which does not bode well for team preparation or chemistry. This could go both ways for Liverpool, however. It could either push the team to play better in the hopes of convincing Salah to stay, or it could fall apart as the rest begin to look at life after Mo.
These teams are also built somewhat similarly, with loads of talent at the top of the pitch and some elite fullbacks to service those potent attackers. The real difference will come in the middle and at the back. Newcastle would seem to have the more reliable defensive line, but the real crux of the game will come down to the midfield.
We think this could be a high-scoring end-to-end battle, so we love the plus odds we’re getting on the over for this game’s 3.5 goal total at +113. In terms of who comes out on top, we would tend to lean towards Newcastle, but this could be one of those rare opportunities to nail some juicy odds for the draw. There’s not much between these teams, so why not go for the value on the draw at +273.

Whoever starts at the top of manager Eddie Howe’s formation for Newcastle will be a great option to score, whether it’s Callum Wilson or Alexander Isak. Wilson started against Aston Villa and scored, while Isak started against a much tougher Manchester City side. Liverpool did give up a goal to Bournemouth’s striker last week, so considering his +105 odds offer more value, we’d recommend Isak here.
Another sneaky option could be Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, who has looked good to start the season and will have a mouth-watering matchup with Trent Alexander-Arnold on Newcastle’s left flank. TAA is elite with the ball at his feet, but he’s not known for his defensive work, which makes Gordon’s +260 odds to score very enticing.
For Liverpool the conversation still begins and ends with Mo Salah, who was excellent against Chelsea, providing an assist before being subbed off early, and scoring twice last week against Bournemouth. He looks like he’s in the zone right now, so +175 odds are more than generous for a premier goalscorer like Salah.
