The Real Favorites: Detroit Lions & Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are pretty much exactly where we thought they would be: division champs just a week into December. However, the way they’ve done it has been far from predictable. Nearly all their wins have not only come by one possession, but included one nutty play that went their way. A blocked kick in Denver, a botched snap against the Raiders, a doink field goal that went in against the Chargers, and more.
The Chiefs’ defense continues to be their strength, as it was last year. The offense has some talented pieces, but they have yet to top 30 points on the season. They’ve scored more than 21 points just once in the last five weeks. While we generally don’t suggest betting against Patrick Mahomes once it starts snowing, as we said back in August: this really feels like the year K.C. can be beat. Their luck can’t last much longer, can it? While they’re decent, +450 odds aren’t all that enticing for a team this unexciting as well.
The Lions weren’t considered a serious contender in the preseason, boasting +1,200 odds, but now they’re the runaway favorites to win Super Bowl 59 according to all sports betting sites. This is without a doubt the only time in the history of the franchise that they have been the favorites to win the Super Bowl - and the craziest thing is, it makes sense.
Their offense is unstoppable. Chock full of talented skill players and tough hogs on the offensive line, Jared Goff has quietly been having an All-Pro season. They’ve scored 20 more points than any other team in the league, and now even their defense is playing.
The way that unit played against the Packers last week - with several key injuries, by the way—has us confident in Detroit this year. The odds, +260, are far from ideal, but the Lions are definitely the team we think is most likely to win the Super Bowl this season.
Also In The Hunt: Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, & Baltimore Ravens
The Philadelphia Eagles lost some major pieces in the offseason, but bringing in Saquon Barkley has seemingly covered up any warts. He’s a shoo-in for OPOY, and might even crack 2,000 behind this elite offensive line. If the Eagles can maintain this level of running game in the playoffs, they’re going to be a very tough out, which is why their +500 odds are very intriguing. And that’s all before discussing their Pro Bowl WR tandem and their No. 1 defense.
Prior to their loss to the Rams in a barnburner on Sunday, the Buffalo Bills were probably everyone’s dark horse candidate. However, Josh Allen putting up six TDs and still losing was all too familiar for those who have been singing his praises for years. He’s going to need more help, but we don’t mind their +650 odds because we believe the Bills have the best shot of slaying the Kansas City dragon.
The Baltimore Ravens, at just 8-5, are slipping a bit, but if they can finish the regular season strong, they’ve got a team that should perform well in the winter. They have the No. 1 run defense, the No. 2 run offense, and the No. 3 pass rush. If Lamar Jackson push his MVP-level of play into the early months of 2025, +1,000 odds could look lovely come February.
Value Picks:
- Minnesota Vikings (+1,600): Sam Darnold has the best weapons cache in the game, he’s clutch, and Brian Flores has this defense flying around.
- Pittsburgh Steelers (+1,800): Russell Wilson has proven that he is not cooked, and their big play + defense formula should translate well in the postseason.
- L.A. Rams (+6,000): The offense is finally healthy, and as Dan Orlovsky said, no one wants to see this unit in the playoffs.
