Derrick Henry has to be thanking the Lord above for his current situation. With Lamar Jackson at his side, defenses won’t be able to key in on the toughest RB in the league to tackle. Henry has always been a dominant back, but he’s especially fond of the end zone. He’s scored 10+ TDs in six straight seasons, and we think he might just hit a new personal record this year.
While some teams like to use their running QBs at the goal line, a la Jalen Hurts or Cam Newton, Jackson packs a little bit less muscle and has been known to pick up the odd injury, so we expect Henry to dominate the touches inside the five-yard line, where he’s always been lethal. His NFL betting odds aren’t ideal, at -105, but they are definitely still bettable.
On the other side, we think the most likely player to score for the Chiefs is Travis Kelce. This is a big stage with the season opener and an AFCCG rematch, and we believe the Chiefs will be looking to feed their star player in this primetime game. Everyone wants more Taylor Swift reaction shots right?
It would follow a trend that has started to develop to start seasons for the Chiefs, as the All-Pro tight end has scored a TD in his first game of the year in four straight campaigns. He has also scored in three of his last five games against this opponent.
Best Bets
- Derrick Henry Anytime TD (-105)
- Travis Kelce Anytime TD (+110)
Isiah Pacheco, RB (KC) - Over 2.5 Receptions (-140)
The Ravens had an excellent defense last year, but they lost one of their best players in LB Patrick Queen, and without him, they could regress. In 2023, they’d already struggled to defend RBs in the passing game, giving up the ninth-most RB receptions in football last year (86).
While the Chiefs did pick up Samaje Perine recently, he may not be ready for a full role just yet, and even if he is, Isiah Pacheco showed that he can consistently contribute in the passing game last year. Pacheco had 3+ receptions in nine of his final 13 outings last year (including playoffs), and we expect his role in the offense to increase, not decrease in 2024.
Travis Kelce, TE (KC) - Over 5.5 Receptions (-125)
As we already touched on, Kelce has been coming out of the gates hot over the last four seasons. He has snagged 6+ receptions in three of his last four season-opening games. It’s also worth noting that Kelce has caught at least six passes in all six games he’s played against the Ravens, averaging 7.3 receptions per game in those contests.
Lamar Jackson, QB (BAL) - Over 47.5 Rush Yards (-110)
On the Baltimore side of things, we’re expecting the reigning MVP to have another big game on the ground against the Chiefs. In last year’s AFCCG, he had 54 yards rushing in what was considered a subpar performance in that respect. Jackson has hit the over on this number in four of five career matchups with the Chiefs, and in the one where he didn’t, he still had 46.
While Jackson has struggled to pile up Ws when playing against Mahomes, he has had no problem scrambling out of the pocket and doing damage with his legs. In four regular season games against the Chiefs, Jackson has averaged 75.8 rush yards, which is his fifth-best mark against any one opponent that he’s played multiple times.
Mark Andrews, TE (BAL) - Over 47.5 Receiving Yards (-110)
Mark Andrews has missed some time recently due to injuries suffered in a car accident last month, but he is back at practice, so we would imagine he’ll be playing with no restrictions in this one. When he’s healthy, he’s still the top dog in Baltimore’s passing offense, and he usually starts the season off well: he’s topped this prop total in three of five season-opening games.
Ontario sportsbooks are offering this up at near-even odds too, which was real nice of them. Andrews hit this number in five of his final seven full games last year, a season during which he averaged 54.4 yards per outing overall. He hasn’t averaged less than 50 yards per game since he was a rookie, so we’re loving the over here.
