Miami Heat: -145 odds

Players have pushed for trades often in recent years, and while they aren’t always moved right when they want to, they are always moved in the end. Jimmy Butler’s situation seems like it’s going to be resolved sooner rather than later. Butler’s got a player option for next year, but apart from that, he’s free to leave South Beach this summer.

That’s why we find these -145 odds somewhat strange. The Heat are clearly about to enter a rebuild, and their best trade asset has indicated his intention to leave. They played with their food all summer and autumn, so they’ll get less in the market now that Butler is clearly looking to leave, but if they don’t move him by the deadline it should be considered professional malpractice by Miami’s front office.

Golden State Warriors: +300 odds

The Warriors need to decide what they want to do this season. It seems like the franchise would love to go for a full rebuild, but Steph Curry refuses to allow them to do so. He’s still one of the best players in the world, and he’s announcing that he is not done with his prime quite yet. They need to do right by him by adding some help. Their youngsters have not developed as much or as quickly as Golden State likely thought.

Butler would fit well with the Warriors’ tough defensive identity, but most importantly, he would provide the Warriors with a reliable secondary scoring option. Because, as of now, they do not have even the shadow of one. Butler would provide massive relief for Curry throughout the game, but especially in pressure and clutch situations, where Butler has been known to thrive.

Houston Rockets: +600 odds

The Rockets have to be one of—if not the—best surprises of this NBA season. They have overachieved like no one outside of Houston could have possibly expected them to. Their young core is coalescing right in front of our eyes, and they have about as much talent as any team in the league. It’s just about moulding that talent into a cohesive unit come spring time.

The way to do that is by relying on their excellent head coach, Ime Udoka, and their resident veteran, Fred Van Vleet. Jimmy Butler would fit in perfectly to make that a trio, as long as the young core reacted well to his unique personality. If Jalen Green, Amen Thompson, and company bought into the dog mentality that Butler was forged in, a Butler-led Rockets team could be very scary.

San Antonio Spurs: +5,000

This is one of the more far-fetched long shots on the odds board, but we’re not quite sure why. It would seem like another veteran would be the perfect addition to this youngster-laden Spurs roster. They probably weren’t coming into this season with high hopes, but now that they’re four games out of the No. 6 seed, they should try to make a run. Chris Paul isn’t getting any younger.

Victor Wembanyama and Paul would seem to be the perfect complements for Butler. Two of the three are elite defenders, all three can create their own shot, both seem like they would accept Butler as an alpha, and CP3 is one of the most efficient and unselfish PGs in NBA history. Butler would give them a bonafide closer where they were lacking one. They might not be ready yet, but it would be pretty darn exciting to see Butler in San Antonio.
