BetMGM reveals 4 Nations Face-Off final the most bet on hockey event in the sportsbook’s history
The 3-2 overtime win by Canada over the USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off final was the most bet on hockey event in history, according to BetMGM. The Canada vs USA final was the second game between the two countries at the 4 Nations Face-Off and the last game of the tournament, with NHL stars representing both teams.
“The 4 Nations tournament was a great success for BetMGM. USA-Canada final was not only the most bet (tickets) hockey event this season but the most bet in BetMGM history. Canada winning was a good outcome for the sportsbook,” said Halvor Egeland, BetMGM trading manager.
The games were two of the most compelling hockey games of the year, with Canada and the USA motivated to pick up a win over the other for their country amid political tension.
According to BetMGM, bettors placed two and a half times more bets on the Canada vs USA final than they placed on any other hockey event this season. Heading into the game, 64 per cent of bets were on the US to win. And 58 per cent of the money was on the US. 26 per cent of the bets were on Canada to win. And 30 per cent of the money was on Canada. Canada and USA had the same odds to win the final at -110 on BetMGM prior to the start of the game. Five of the seven most bet on hockey games this year were 4 Nations Face-Off games, according to BetMGM.
Canada vs USA the second-most watched hockey game of the decade
The final was also the second-most watched hockey game of the decade in North America, according to the NHL. The game was watched by 9.3 million viewers in the US and 6.3 million in Canada. Overall the game was watched by 16.1 million viewers in North America. The most watched game was game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers with 16.3 million viewers.
The 4 Nations Face-Off games took place from February 12 to 20. Sweden and Finland were the two other teams in the tournament. Overall, the tournament averaged 6.5 million viewers in North America and the biggest hockey event of the year for the betting sites.
