Chiefs (-250) & 49ers (-200) to Win Division Parlay: +110 Odds
This one might seem obvious, but sometimes those are the smartest bets, believe it or not. The two best teams from 2023 did nothing this offseason to dissuade us that they maintain that status heading into the 2024 campaign, though the Chiefs have seemingly done everything in their power off the field to do so.
Nonetheless, the Chiefs have improved their receiving corps, essentially the only weakness from their 2023 Super Bowl-winning roster, and there are no serious challengers in their division. While the 49ers do have the Rams to contend with, Kyle Shanahan’s Death Star is still fully stocked as long as it stays healthy.
San Fran has won their division for two straight years and three of the last five, while the Chiefs haven’t finished anywhere but first in the AFC West since Barack Obama was in office, a span of eight seasons. For a pair of sure things, +110 odds are more than welcome here.
AFC Best Bet: Houston Texans to Win Division: +100 Odds
After the Chiefs, the team with the next shortest odds to win their division in the AFC is the Houston Texans, and for good reason. They’re in a division that offers potential but not much immediate threat, as Anthony Richardson and Trevor Lawrence are unproven and inconsistent, and the Titans are a work-in-progress.
Meanwhile, the Texans got a jump on their turnaround last year, and they doubled down on their all-of-a-sudden “win-now” philosophy this spring, getting their young QB, C.J. Stroud, some more toys to play with while also fortifying elsewhere. The AFC South is still one of the weaker divisions in football, so plus odds from Ontario sportsbooks here are a blessing we couldn’t ignore.
NFC Best Bet: Detroit Lions to Win Division: +130 Odds
Some may call this a bold choice, and we would agree—but we trust the Lions a lot more than the Eagles and Falcons right now. Philly lost our trust after their abominable finish to last year, and the Cowboys remain formidable, even if they did tread water this offseason. Despite his talents, Kirk Cousins has only won two division titles in eight years as a starter.
Meanwhile, the Lions seem to be treading the line perfectly between confidence after their surprise playoff run and hunger after it fell tantalizingly short. They’ve paid all of their top guys, and they honed in on their awful secondary in free agency and the draft, replacing nearly the entire unit. They seem primed for another deep playoff run, and they will be able to hold off the oncoming Packers and Bears for one more season in 2024.
Best Long Shots: Steelers (+700) and Buccaneers (+300)
The AFC North is likely to be the strongest division in football, and that has to do with how good the group’s seemingly fourth-best team is. The Steelers defense is one of the best in the league, their running game is solid, George Pickens is a star, and if Russell Wilson pops, they could be seriously good. At +700, this is the best dart throw on the board.
In the NFC, the Buccaneers don’t offer quite as much value at +300, but with a full year of familiarity with the team and a $100 million contract under his belt, Baker Mayfield should be even better for Tampa in 2024, and we’re not as high on the Cousins-led Falcons as most others. Tampa Bay brought back its core, and that core are all in their primes.
